FAQ'S

Q1 - Does my child need to wear Woodvale Little Athletics Club (WLAC) uniform when competing on Saturdays at Kingsway?

Yes, your little athlete(s) needs to wear the WLAC t-shirt or singlet and dark blue shorts.  You will also need to pin the appropriate name + competition number/age group tags on the front of their top (you will receive these during training, before Saturday competitions start).  The Kingsway navy blue competition shorts are compulsory for State events.

Q2 - Can my child run in bare feet, either at training or during Saturday competition?

No, your athlete must run in appropriate shoes for athletics, even during training sessions.  Please note that shoes with spikes are only allowed for U11-17s and only after getting Head Coach approval and a green dot on their age tag.

Q3 - Does my child need to take part in all events at training sessions and on Saturdays?

Strictly speaking, no, and not for the older age groups who may have already chosen their favourite discipline(s).  However, we do encourage the younger age groups to at least attempt to participate in most, if not all, events.

Q4 - Can my child miss one or more Saturdays?

An occasional missed Saturday is not an issue, however, we do require children to participate in 75% of the Saturday competitions to be eligible for a participation trophy at the end of the season unless we have been notified of a potential lengthy absence (injury, illness, holiday etc).

Q5 - Do you offer a free trial?

Yes, we do, your child may try 2 training sessions and Kingsway Little Athletics Centre offers a Come and Try day the first competition day.

Q6 - If we register our child with WLAC and, after a few sessions, our child does not wish to continue, can we get a refund of (part of) the registration fee?

No, once the registration fee has been paid and your child has competed on (a) Saturday(s), there is no (partial) refund simply for changing your mind.  Lengthy illness/injuries will be taken into account.

Q7 - Are all WLAC coaches accredited?

No, some of our coaches are level 1 or level 2 accredited Little Athletics coaches but most of our coaches are parent volunteers.  WLAC does encourage interested parents to take part in one of the accredited coaching courses offered throughout the year.

Q8 - What happens if my child is injured during training sessions or Saturday competition?

WLAC have qualified First Aid volunteers who will assess any injury and take appropriate action with the consent of any appropriate parent/guardian present.  Similarly, on Saturdays, Kingsway LAC First Aid volunteers will take action, if required.  Athletics West have appropriate injury insurance which covers your little athlete as soon as they have registered.

Q9 - On Saturday competitions or weekday training sessions, am I able to drop my athlete off and return at the end to collect?

No, we don’t advise this, for safety reasons, and definitely not for the younger age groups.  As a parent/caregiver, you are responsible for the athlete(s) in your charge for the duration of their competition on a Saturday and at training sessions.  Please also be aware that Saturday competitions rely heavily on parent help.

Q10 - How often will I need to volunteer as a parent on Saturdays?

During the season (October to March), each family will be required to do a number of roster duties.  As with most things, many hands make light work!  Every family needs to do their bit.  Rosters are by online sign up only and will consist of various duties such as putting up and packing away tents, boundary bunting, setting out and packing away equipment (jump and throw sites etc), selling raffle tickets, recording (event results) etc etc.  Duties do not include assisting at events, as parents are already required to assist during their child(ren)'s events, such as raking the jump pit, measuring jumps and throws, retrieving throwing implements etc.

Q11 - Do I need to have experience in order to help out/fulfil roster duties?

No, not at all, someone will show you what to do.

Q12 - As an interested parent, can I help during training sessions?

Absolutely, all of our coaches would be happy for any assistance you can give, especially in the younger age groups, whether it's just ‘crowd control’, retrieving shot puts/discus etc., or perhaps you are an ex-athlete or coach yourself and are willing to share your knowledge.

Q13 - How often does my child need to attend training sessions?

50% or more attendance at training is required to receive a participation trophy at the end of season.  You should inform our recorder if your child has other regular commitments that clash with a training session.  Please advise us if your child is injured or if you are going on a lengthy holiday.

Q14 - Where can I find info on the events my athlete will compete in?

Please refer to the Kingsway Little Athletics Centre website and Facebook page (links can be found under our "Useful Links" page.
